Manchester United: Van de Beek, Lingard, Henderson, AWB and other Man United outcasts look to impress new Manager Ralf Rangnick as Red Devils prepare for UCL tie – Manchester United have made several changes in the managerial position with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked, followed by Michael Carrick being in charge for 3 games and then finally Ralf Rangnick coming in to be in charge until the end of the season. Many players such as Jesse Lingard, Donny Van de Beek and Diogo Dalot who were left out by Solskjaer in most of the games were looking for a move in January, but with a change in manager every player has a fresh opportunity to impress the new Manchester United manager.

The likes of Lingard, Dean Henderson, Van de Beek, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Amad Diallo will all look for a place in the Starting XI before deciding for a move elsewhere with the January transfer window soon approaching.

With the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, the mood around Manchester United has changed as was evident in the 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace. Man United produced a completely dominant display with lots of pressing in the final third which had been a rare sight in United’s past performances. All the pundits and fans were surprised as the new Manager got just 1 training session to prepare his side for the game against Palace.

With United already qualifying for Champions League knockout stages, Ralf Rangnick will look to rest his star players who started against Palace and give a chance to the likes of  Lingard, Van de Beek, Amad, Anthony Elanga and Henderson to feature against Young Boys.

Jesse Lingard: ( 12 Apps, 2 Goals, 1 Assist)

Jesse Lingard who scored a couple of goals coming off the bench at the start of the season during Solskjaer’s reign couldn’t cement his place in the team. And with the arrival of the Ralf, Lingard will be hoping to get more game time to impress the new boss but if the England international is not given much playing time, a move to West Ham is imminent in January for Lingard.

The New Manager Ralf Rangnick had his say on Lingard’s situation: “As I said, everybody has the chance to perform and present himself, that’s why I’m happy to give game time to quite a few of those players tomorrow, to see them under pressure in a Champions League game in front of hopefully 70 or 75,000 in a sold-out stadium. So, this is a perfect opportunity to get to know the players, like I did last Sunday against Palace with the others. We’ve only had a week of training so far and with every impression, with every training session, with every opportunity to see them play in competitive games, I will get to know them better.”

Donny Van de Beek: ( 10 Apps, 1 Goal)

Van de Beek who had signed for Manchester United in September 2020 has made 46 appearances but almost 90% of those appearances have come off the bench. This year Donny scored his first goal of the season against Watford in what proved to be Solskjaer’s last game for the club. Since Ole left the club, Donny has played a total of 72 minutes under Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick.

Dean Henderson: (1 Appearance)

Dean Henderson who was highly praised last season for leaving David De Gea on the bench and playing in over 12 matches towards the end of the season. It was claimed that Henderson will topple De Gea and be the first-choice keeper for the Red Devils, but this season it has been a completely different story for Henderson who hasn’t played in a single Premier League or Champions League match. De Gea has been in brilliant form which has meant the young keeper has had to remain on the bench.

Rangnick on Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek: Both of them will play tomorrow in the first XI. As you saw, Donny came on as a sub last Sunday and I know that Dean is a very, very good, ambitious goalkeeper. We definitely need two goalkeepers, I would say the three goalkeepers that really come into recognition for the first team. As I said, I have to get to know the players first in the next couple of weeks in order to finally assess them. Right now, I am more than happy to have all of them on board and I will try to give them as much game time as possible.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: ( 17 Apps)

Wan-Bissaka was always the first choice right-back whenever fully fit for Ole and even Michael Carrick but because the right-back had a niggle, he was replaced by Diogo Dalot for the Arsenal and Crystal Palace match. With Diogo Dalot providing lots of attacking impetus on the right flank and Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggling in terms of attacking output, this might be Wan Bissaka’s time to step up the attacking side of his game.

With Manchester United playing from the front, pressing their opponents Ralf would prefer a right back with more attacking intent to supply his attackers since he already plays with two defensive midfielders. It is a chance for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to show his team that he can deliver in attacking terms as well by pressing the opponent and providing inch-perfect crosses.

Young Boys: For the Champions League game against Young Boys, Manchester United have added six youngsters to the squad: Björn Hardley. Charlie Wellens, Charlie Savage, Zidane Iqbal, Sam Mather and Shola Shoretire.

The Manchester United boss has hinted that many players who started against Crystal Palace will be rested due to the busy festive period and that he will rest as many players as possible and will give other players more game time in order to prove their worth to be in the starting XI. The coach will be vary of not making too many changes as it would affect the partnership and momentum of the squad.

“I haven’t finally decided but it makes sense we will rest a few players due to the crowded fixture list. We need to make sure we have as many recovered players as possible but also need the positive momentum.”

Rangnick on Varane & Cavani: “They both cannot play tomorrow but they were part of the training today. Edi even yesterday, Rapha the first time.”
