Manchester United have ramped up their preparations to modernize Old Trafford and last week announced that they had allocated a team to revamp their home ground. The planners, who designed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will oversee the Old Trafford redevelopment, with early signs suggesting that there is to be a likely increase in the seating capacity.

As per the Daily Mail, the project includes an addition of about 15,000 more seats along with a long-overdue upgrade of the club’s corporate facilities. The Sir Bobby Charlton Stand is likely to be extended, taking Old Trafford’s capacity to a staggering 88,000. Should the changes be implicated, Old Trafford will be second only to the Wembley Stadium in terms of capacity in the UK.

Manchester United have around 100,000 supporters on the waiting list for season tickets and the owners want to ensure that there is enough demand for the expanded stadium to be full on a regular basis. The Manchester United Stadium expansion is likely to cost more than £200million.

It is understood that the club’s existing debt, which was £495m at the end of 2021, will not prevent them from borrowing more money. That figure remains on the books following the Glazer family’s leveraged takeover in 2005.

It emerged last month that demolishing Old Trafford and rebuilding it from scratch was one of the more drastic options being considered. United have been looking at the possibility of extending the older South Stand over a railway line for some time, and also have the option of a large amount of additional land available next to the site.

Sources say the club remains open-minded about the redevelopment, adding that it will ‘focus on modernisation and potential expansion’ while aiming to ‘preserve the identity and heritage of Old Trafford’.
