Roger Federer LAVER CUP: Federer took the decision to retire from the ATP tour in the presence of wife Mirka and parents Robert and Lynette. The legendary tennis player in his announcement said: “The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the Tour.”

Federer will play for Team Europe, which includes the likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Bjorn Borg, among others.

What is Laver Cup ?

The Laver Cup pits six of the top players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the world. The event is comprised of five sessions played over three days.

The Laver Cup started in 2017 and has continued every year thereafter, with the exception of 2020, when it was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Laver Cup: How does it work ?

Each team has a captain who is a legendary figure in the sport, and each team consists of six players. Bjorn Borg is the captain of Team Europe, and John McEnroe is the captain of Team World.

Based on their ATP singles rankings as of the Monday after the French Open, three of the six competitors qualify for the tournament. Other three players are “captain’s picks”, announced by the start of the US Open.

Laver Cup Format

The event consists of five sessions played over three days (Friday – Sunday). Both singles and doubles are best of three sets with ad scoring. In the event of split sets, the third set is a 10-point match tiebreaker.

Each player competes in at least one singles match during the first two days. No player can play singles more than twice during the three days. At least four of the six players must play doubles. No doubles combination is played more than once, unless for the Decider on Day 3, if points are 12:12.

The first team to reach 13 points out of a total 24 points available wins the Laver Cup. If the points are tied at 12:12 at the end of all 12 matches, a final overtime doubles match – a Decider – is played as a regular set with ad scoring and a tiebreak on Day 3.
