Joao Cancelo was an important part of Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola’s system in the beginning. However, by the end of last year, his playing time and a loan transfer seemed like the best option. Hence, he was sent to Bayern Munich on a loan transfer during the winter transfer window. As per reports, Bayern did not have to pay anything to Man City to bring Cancelo on loan. Yet it seemed to have been a good deal for Bayern as Cancelo made it home at Bayern. As of now, he has appeared in 18 games for Bayern throughout all competitions.
Cancelo has also managed to score once and provide 5 assists during these 18 matches. He always has not been a starter, but the 28-year-old made his impact. The defender featured in both legs of Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final match against his former club, Manchester City. However, Bayern could not win and were knocked out of the competition by Man City. Bayern also got knocked out of the DFB Pokal in early April. They are now at the top of the Bundesliga table, but only owing to a one-point lead over 2nd-placed Borussia Dortmund.
At this stage, they are taking drastic measures to bring the necessary changes to the team. Manchester City made the deal with the option for Bayern Munich to buy Cancelo on a permanent basis with a €70 million fee. The loan deal ends at the end of this season, so they will have to trigger the option at that time. Otherwise, Cancelo will go back to Manchester City. However, Man City have adjusted well to life without the talented right-back. Even if he does go back to Man City, he will not get enough playing time.
The situation has become fruitful for Barcelona who now have an opportunity to bring Cancelo on another loan. As per reports, they have already contacted Cancelo’s agent Jorge Mendes regarding the matter. Apparently, Mendes has even visited Barcelona and as per the news website Sport, talks were even held between the two parties. Jorge Mendes has told Barcelona that considering Barcelona’s financial issues, a financially appealing deal can be drawn. This involves bringing the player to Camp Nou on another loan transfer.
Barcelona coach Xavi did not have in mind to bring another right-back like Cancelo. He was actually eyeing the Villareal’s talented 25-year-old right-back Juan Foyth. However, he will cost a little more than what Barcelona can afford right now. In all consideration, Cancelo is a talented player with a lot of experience. Hence, Barcelona can profit from his talent and he could get a restart on his performances at Barcelona.
