Italian Open LIVE: Reigning US Open Champion Emma Raducanu will be playing her third tournament on clay court this year as she begins her Italian Open campaign on Tuesday (10th May). - After winning the US Open title last year, Raducanu has had a mixed year so far in 2022 without much success.
- She faced first round defeats in Sydney International, Abierto de Guadalajara and in Miami Open. She also faced second round defeats in Australian Open and Indian Wells Masters.
- However on clay she has shown a much-improved performance with her best performance at Stuttgart Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.
- At Madrid, she reached the third round and went down to Anhelina Kalinina in three sets.
- She is now looking to better her Stuttgart Open performance as she begins her Italian Open campaign.
- At the moment, she doesn’t have a coach after splitting with Torben Beltz last month. The Briton has taken a liking to the independence of coaching herself.
- Meanwhile, 2019 US Open Champion Bianca Andreescu is playing just her third tournament this year.
- The 21-year old took an indefinite break from the sport during December last year and after a four-month hiatus, she made her return to the circuit by participating in the Stuttgart Open.
- In the tournament, she lost against Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the second round.
- At Madrid, she reached the third round and was defeated in straight sets by finalist Jessica Pegula. Like Raducanu, she too is aiming to better her performance at Italian Open.
Raducanu vs Andreescu Head-to-Head: This will be the first meeting between both these players. Based on current form, Raducanu enters the contest as the favourite, however she can expect a tough challenge from Andreescu.
Speaking before the contest, Raducanu feels confident even though she doesn’t have a personal coach and said she is heading in the right direction on the surface ahead of the French Open starting later this month. “To be on my own is interesting because I’m kind of finding out a lot about myself, understanding what I need and what I don’t need,” she said.
“I definitely feel like I have been progressing with each week, improving, getting a better understanding of how to play points, when to stay in the point or when to stay aggressive,” she said.
Meanwhile, Andreescu is looking forward to playing Raducanu and said, “Obviously she is a really good player. So I’m expecting a really good match. I remember saying, ‘I want to play her’ and looks like I got my wish.”
