IMPACT Player RULE in IPL 2023: As per multiple reports, the BCCI could include the Impact player rule in the upcoming IPL 2023 season. The rule offers a team the chance to substitute a player in the middle of the game to skew their advantage. The impact player rule was previously implied in tournaments like the Big Bash League.
The BCCI conducted a trial of the same in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The tournament featured several IPL stars. The feedback regarding the rule was very good, Cricbuzz reports. The domestic coaches also responded well to the change. A decision to include it in the IPL was taken on Thursday, during a virtual IPL Governing Council Meeting.

According to the rules, along with the starting XI, teams can mention four substitutes at the time of the toss. However, only one of those four can be used during the match. The said substitute can replace the player from the XI. Nonetheless, the change can only happen before the end of the 14th over of either inning. He can bat and bowl his full allotment of overs. The rule however is not applicable in case of a match is reduced to less than 10 overs.
IPL 2023: What is the impact player rule?
- Each team can name 4 substitutes alongside their playing XI
- Among those four, one can be called upon to replace the any player in the Playing XI
- The impact player can bowl and bat, unlike a substitute fielder.
- The change however can only be made before the 14th over of the innings.
- At no point can franchises exceed their limit of 4-overseas players in the XI.
BCCI long expressed their interest in introducing the change in T20s. Before the SMAT20, the Indian cricket board intimidated all state units by introducing ‘new dimensions’ into the game.
“With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint. The BCCI would like to introduce the concept of ‘Impact Player’ wherein participating teams could replace one member of its playing XI during a T20 match based on the context of the game,” the BCCI had said in a statement to the state units earlier this year.
