The IPL 2022 league matches will now be conducted in Mumbai in three venues. The BCCI wants to host the playoffs in Ahmedabad but a decision on that will be taken at a later stage. As per a TOI report, three stadiums in Mumbai — Wankhede, Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium — have been zeroed in on to hos the league matches. The playoff matches could be moved to Ahmedabad. But considering it will involve travelling, a decision on that will be taken depending on the situation.

To avoid air travel which increases the risk of exposure, the BCCI has already kept the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Gahunje, near Pune on standby.
Mumbai to Host IPL – As per the last official statement by the BCCI, the IPL 2022 will start on 27th March. BCCI Sec Jay Shah had informed the media last week that the board & the franchises are keen to host IPL in India itself.
Towing the same line & seeing the current Covid-19 situation in India, BCCI office-bearers also gave their consent for hosting the entire season of IPL in Mumbai.

Which stadiums will be used to host IPL 2022?
- Mumbai’s three stadiums will be used to host IPL Matches
- Wankhede, Brabourne and DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai have already been shortlisted.
- If required Pune can also be considered as a venue.

“Yes, I believe that the IPL is coming to CCI, and we’ll be very glad to host it,” CCI president Premal Udani told TOI.

Crowd to be allowed in IPL? – Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has allowed a 25 per cent crowd for sporting events after lifting a host of restrictions. If the third wave situation continues to improve, BCCI is hopeful of the crowd back in the stadiums. But the Indian board is also mindful of the fact that it could disrupt the bio-bubble.
“If the number of positive cases aren’t high around that time, the state government authorities are likely to allow around 25% capacity crowds for this year’s IPL,” a top politician said on the condition of anonymity.
The idea is to replicate the ‘model’ of the Wankhede Test match last December between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, the report added.

“As per that guideline, 50% capacity was allowed indoors, which means that corporate boxes, and perhaps the press box, could be filled up to 50% of the capacity,” a reliable source told this paper.
Maharashtra is keen to organise national & international sports events with strict bio-secure bubbles. It is hosting AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Mumbai & Pune, the Tata Open Tennis tournament in Pune.
