IPL 2022 Mega Auction: 10 Reasons Why Chennai Super Kings (CSK) likely to retain MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad – With less than two weeks left for announcing the four retained players, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) board room is one of the busiest. Not only MS Dhoni is a big factor in retentions, but the four slabs mandated by the IPL have also created a massive headache for a team like CSK, who bank on consistency in retentions. If Ruturaj Gaikwad is one who CSK will bank on for the future, Faf du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja’s fantastic form forces the team management to mull over 4 possible retentions.

The fact that MS Dhoni has also hinted at a comeback in IPL 2022, the former Indian skipper’s retention is on the cards. But by November 30, the team must disclose their retention list while the defending champions also must plan for continuity for the next season.

InsideSport takes a look at the four stars from the title-winning squad whom CSK will likely to retain.

MS Dhoni (Slab 1): Even though Dhoni has put a question mark on his return, he hasn’t ruled it out completely. Furthermore, he wanted to call it quits in front of CSK’s home crowd at Chepauk. That could see him return for one last season.

Considering his value to the team and what he means for CSK and the yellow army, MS Dhoni is likely to be the team’s highest category retention at Rs 16 Cr. He has lifted 4 IPL titles for them and is the nucleus of the entire set-up.

Ravindra Jadeja (Slab 2): After picking the captain, the team is likely to go for their star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who is undoubtedly a vital cog in CSK’s wheel. His contribution with bat, ball and as a fielder makes him the most valuable player. Jadeja is likely to be retained for Rs 12 crore. Last season, he earned Rs 7 crore from CSK.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Slab 4, Rs 6 crore): Ruturaj Gaikwad With two experienced Indian players retained the CSK team management will likely go for a youngster like Ruturaj Gaikwad who bagged the Orange cap scoring a whopping 635 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2021 season. Ruturaj Gaikwad could well be CSK future leader and perhaps the team is going to groom him for that. The opener is likely going to get an amount of 6 crores.

Faf du Plessis (Slab 3, Rs 8 Cr): With 1 slot left out of the 4, the only overseas player CSK is likely to go for is former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis. The South African could well get 8 crores as he was the 2nd in the list of leading run-scorers scoring 633 in 16 matches in IPL 2021.

  • Salary Cap – 90 Crores
  • Old Franchises: Will Name Retained Players by 30th November 2021, maximum of 4 players can be retained. 3 Indians & maximum two foreigners
  • New Franchises: 2 New teams to finalized their 3 players outside of auction between 1st December 2021 to 30th December 2021. Not more than 2 Indians & 1 foreigner
  • RTM Cards: There will also be no Right to Match (RTM) cards this time around.

The BCCI has also outlined how much funds will be deducted from the salary cap as per their choices of retentions.

  • TOTAL Players Purse – 90 Crore
  • 4 Players retained, Rs 42 crore will cut from the player purse.
  • 3 retentions will lead to a reduction of Rs 33 crores
  • 2 retentions will result in deduction of 24 crore from the player purse.
  • 1 Retained Player: 14 crore will be deducted from the purse.

As per the new proposal, BCCI is mulling over allowing the two new franchises — Ahmedabad and Lucknow — to pick three players each from the auction pool.

  • It means the two new teams will be able to pick three unretained players from the auction pool first.
  • Franchises are concerned that if the new teams are allowed to pick any three players from the auction pool, they will not be able to use RTMs for them.
  • The BCCI and IPL governing council are yet to convey their decision on RTMs to the franchises.
  • As per the last discussion, each franchise will be able to retain four players.
  • Amongst the four, one player must be uncapped.
  • A maximum of three Indian players could be retained.
  • For foreigners, a maximum of two foreign players can be retained but that will reduce the number of retainers to three including an uncapped player.
  • In previous auctions, franchises were allowed to use a maximum of four RTMs. But it is likely to be reduced to two.
