A gigantic task lies ahead of these five players as they have not been retained by their former teams and thus they would be eager to perform in the upcoming 3 ODI scheduled to take place against the Proteas in South Africa.

All these 5 players are a part of the 17 member squad that would fight to win the series after failing to win the test series in South Africa. The men in blue would be led from the front by K L Rahul who would undertake the skipper duties from Rohit Sharma after the latter could not take part in India’s tour of South Africa owing to injuries and fitness issues.

Shikhar Dhawan: The prolific hard-hitting opener for the Men in Blue has been a star performer in IPL. However, off-late injury concerns alongside fitness issues and forms have seen his name dropped from the Indian National team. One of the major concerns for Dhawan is his age.

At 36 years, holding onto the fitness and competing with youngsters can be a huge disadvantage for him. However, his batting stats in last season’s IPL for Delhi Capitals speak otherwise.

In 16 innings, Dhawan scored 587 runs, his second-highest run tally in IPL. In 2020 Dhawan, scored his all-time career-high score tally when he scored 618 runs in 17 innings. Apart from his age, his salary of 5.2 Cr is also a bit of a bother for the teams. But a player of Dhawan’s caliber would be banking on his experience to perform well in the upcoming ODI series to attract franchisees to acquire his contract.

Ravichandran Ashwin: Another important name on this list is that of Ravichandran Ashwin. The star all-rounder needs no introduction to anyone. Plagued by age and off form and injuries, Ashwin has been sidelined from white-ball cricket for a long time. His last season’s IPL form was quite average to say the very least.

In 13 matches he was successful in acquiring just 7 wickets by conceding 331 runs with an average of 47.28. The drop in his form has been consistent as he bagged 15 wickets and 13 wickets respectively in IPL 2019 and 2020 respectively. His batting stats for IPL 2021 was quite marginal after scoring 44 runs in 13 innings.

With an annual salary of 7.6 Cr and an age of 35 years, Ashwin will have to perform really well in the upcoming ODI’s to cement his spot in any of the 10 IPL teams.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been a well-known face in the IPL since 2011. However, his performance both in IPL and for the Indian National team was often limited owing to his various injuries. The lanky fast bowler had a stinker of a season in IPL 2021 after bagging just 6 wickets over a course of 11 matches with an average of 55.83.

His 2020 IPL season was also short-lived after he was sidelined with injury, thus playing just 4 games in the entire tournament. At an age of 31 years and with an annual salary of 8.5 Cr Bhuvneshwar Kumar was dropped from the Sunrisers Hyderabad team and would be desperate to put up a good show in the 3 ODI matches against the Proteas.

Deepak Chahar: It was quite a surprise when Deepak Chahar was not retained by Chennai Super Kings after having provided quite a decent form in IPL 2021. Over a span of 15 games, Chahar bagged 14 dismissals with an average of 32.21. However, his career-best performance in IPL came in 2019 where he bagged 22 wickets in 17 games with an average of 21.90.

His IPL 2020 season was quite average after picking up 12 wickets in 14 games. The 29-year-old bowler who has an annual salary of 80 Lakhs, would be eager to show his mettle and to impress the 10 teams to acquire his services for IPL 2022.

Jayant Yadav: Things look pretty gloomy for Jayant Yadav after his previous IPL stint. In 2021 he picked 2 wickets in 5 games with an average of 65.00. Having played a total of 19 IPL matches from 2015 the 31-year-old allrounder who has an annual salary of 50 lakhs will be desperate to perform in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa after he was dropped from the Mumbai Indians team.
