IPL 2022: 5 different venues being explored to host IPL 2022

  • If things improve on Covid-19 front entire IPL will be hosted in India on same HOME & AWAY rule / all 10 franchise cities will be used
  • If Covid situation doesn’t improve – IPL can happen only in Maharashtra / Mumbai & Pune will host the entire IPL
  • IPL goes to UAE the way it was done in IPL 2020 & IPL 2021 – at 3 venues i.e Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah
  • IPL Moves to South Africa as players have shown interest to play in the African continent. It had hosted the first leg of the tournament in 2009 due to general elections.
  • Sri Lanka has thrown their hat in the ring to host IPL in Colombo

INDIA?

The first option for BCCI is to conduct the IPL 2022 in India. However, this is hugely dependant on the Covid front. If there is a decrease in the number of cases, and the spread of the new variant is effectively contained then the BCCI can look to continue the IPL 2022 in its original format. This includes both the home and away fixtures to take place on the grounds of the 10 different franchise cities that will be taking part in this upcoming tournament.

Maharashtra?

The next option is based on whether the Covid cases are not contained effectively. In such a scenario the BCCI might have an option of conducting the IPL 2022 in India, however, the entire tournament would thus be scheduled to take place in the state of Maharastra, with Mumbai and Pune being the two cities that would host this premier tournament.

UAE

The third option open for the chief board of Cricket for the Nation is to conduct the IPL 2022 on foreign soil. And with that being said, the first option which is open for BCCI is to conduct the tournament in UAE. Previously UAE has hosted this tournament thrice. Complete as well as partial editions of IPL 2020 and 2021 were conducted here along with some fixtures of the 7th edition of the tournament in 2014 when some fixtures were shifted owing to the then ongoing elections in the country. Like the previous two editions, if hosted in UAE, the tournament would be conducted in the three iconic stadiums of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.

South Africa

With the Indian National team concluding their 3 match test series away in South Africa, the BCCI might consider hosting the IPL 2022 on African soil. The 2nd edition of IPL in 2009 was conducted in South Africa previously. South Africa has opened up to be a new spot after the BCCI received positive feedbacks from the players based on the bio-bubble features and other necessary protective norms that were conducted during India’s tour of South Africa.

Sri Lanka

The fifth option for BCCI is to host IPL 2022 in the neighboring country of Sri Lanka. The island nation of Sri Lanka has joined the fray to host this premier tournament in its capital city of Colombo.

Mohan de Silva, the secretary of the SLC told Crickbuzz that “We have seen reports and we will be happy to host the IPL in Sri Lanka. We will initiate talks with the BCCI regarding this soon.”

It remains to be seen what the BCCI opts to choose from these five available options. If the Covid cases remain under a check, the iconic IPL bandwagon would most definitely take place in India. Otherwise, plan B for BCCI would be to host the IPL 2022 on foreign soil. The IPL 2022 is tentatively scheduled to start from 2nd April 2022 and continue till 3rd June 2022.
