IPL 2022: Andy Flower, Daniel Vettori to coach Lucknow? IPL 2022 new team Lucknow franchise have shortlisted Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower and New Zealand spin legend Daniel Vettori for the head coach position. Andy Flower is the leading contender after leaving the assistant coaching role at Punjab Kings. The latter reportedly has good relations with former PBKS captain KL Rahul who is likely to lead the Lucknow franchise. They apparently recommended each other names for respective roles. “There is a good chance that he [Andy Flower] goes to one of the new teams (Lucknow or Ahmedabad),” a BCCI official had told PTI on Wednesday.

  • The Kiwi spin legend can bring a lot of IPL experience with him at Lucknow.
  • He has served as the head coach of RCB from 2014-18. He was also named spin bowling coach by Bangladesh Cricket Board in 2019.
  • The 42-year-old has worked with KL Rahul who played for RCB in IPL 2016-17 season.
  • He has also served as head coach of CPL franchise Barbados Royals.
  • The 34-year-old has played 34 IPL matches and led RCB in 22 games. He has represented Kiwis in 295 ODIs and 113 Tests. He served as Blackcaps skipper from 2007 to 2011.

  • There is a good possibility that the 53-year-old is given a bigger role in his next IPL assignment.
  • Flower worked alongside head coach Anil Kumble for the past two seasons. The development comes at a time when K L Rahul, Punjab Kings skipper for the past two seasons, is expected to move to the Lucknow franchise.
  • Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower, who worked as a coach in England for more than a decade and guided the national team there, was hired for his maiden IPL stint ahead of the 2020 season.
  • During his stint with the England team, Flower led the side to the T20 World Cup title in 2010 and number one spot in the Test rankings.
  • In his cricket career, he represented Zimbabwe in 213 ODIs and 63 Test matches.

Meanwhile, Gary Kirsten and Trevor Bayliss too were in the contention but did not make the final cut, the report added.

The Lucknow-based new franchise wanted to pick KL Rahul (Rs 11 crore- last IPL salary) from the draft ahead of the auction. The new entrant reportedly tried to persuade Rahul to leave Punjab Kings. If proven guilty, the player can be suspended like Ravindra Jadeja was in 2010.
