Virat Kohli took to social media late on Thursday and paid a rich tribute to former India captain MS Dhoni. On August 25, Kohli (Jersey No.18) remembered Dhoni (Jersey No.7) and their partnerships together over time before the latter retired in 2019.

Dhoni, who won the Asia Cup twice in his time as captain, took Virat under his wing as vice-captain before handing him the reigns in 2017. The legendary keeper continued to feature as a batsman for two more years, creating many more memories with Kohli.

In an emotional post, Kohli wrote, “Being this man’s trusted deputy was the most enjoyable and exciting period in my career. Our partnerships would always be special to me forever. 7+18 ❤️”

Virat Kohli, who was handed his debut by Dhoni, did enjoy batting with the Indian legend, stitching quite a few partnerships over their decade together as international cricketers. The 33-year-old has previously spoken about how batting with the maverick keeper was simpler and their telepathic understanding while running between the wickets.

Incidentally, Kohli and Dhoni batted together and took India across the finish line in the former’s last Asia Cup tie. Chasing 121 in a 15-over game, Kohli remained unbeaten on 41 while Dhoni fired a 6-ball 20 cameo to crown India champions. That title was India’s first Asia Cup crown after six years.

Now in the post Dhoni-era, Kohli has also stepped down and handed over the mantle to Rohit Sharma. Kohli was not part of the team that Rohit led to glory in 2018. He however will hope to set the record straight this time around when he takes the field in UAE. India begin their campaign against Pakistan on August 28.
