India Tour of England: India vs Leicestershire Live: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is very unhappy with the players in England. The reason? The players roamed freely, mingled with fans against the advice of the medical team and the board. The result? Indian captain Rohit Sharma tested positive and is doubtful for the 5th Test against England, starting July 1. Follow IND vs ENG Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

“It was very irresponsible for the team. They were informed of the risks and were advised not to roam around in public places without masks. But we see Rohit, Virat, Rishabh and almost everyone ignoring all the advice. It was bound to happen (Rohit testing positive),” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

  • Rohit Sharma tested positive in a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on 25th June.
  • Rohit is currently under 5-day isolation in Leicester.
  • He will need to return two negative RT-PCR tests by June 30, sixth day of isolation.
  • If he returns negative in the first RT-PCR result by Sunday evening, it will clear the path.
  • The results are expected by 8 PM IST.
  • If he tests positive, he will remain in isolation till June 29 until he returns two negative RT-PCR tests.
  • The entire team underwent RAT tests but none returned positive.
  • The team will leave for Birmingham on Tuesday.
  • Jasprit Bumrah has been put on standby as captain as the BCCI believes Rishabh Pant is not ready to lead in Test cricket.

The 5th Test was scheduled for September 10-14 in 2021. But both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli refused to play after a Covid-19 outbreak in Indian camp ahead of the Manchester Test. The match had to be rescheduled. But things did not go smoothly. The England & Wales Cricket Board asked the BCCI for compensation. The BCCI ended up settling the matter with a rescheduled fixture.

But Rohit Sharma is now very much doubtful for the 5th Test as he will be in 5-day isolation. He will be available only if he returns two negative RT-PCR tests by June 30, 5th day of isolation.

“It doesn’t look like Rohit will be able to make it. Although he is well, he will need to return two negative tests by June 30 night. That’s very tight if you consider the time frame. During these days, he won’t be able to travel to Birmingham, making it almost impossible to appear for 5th Test,” the BCCI official told InsideSport.

The BCCI has already informed Jasprit Bumrah to be ready to take over captaincy reins. While Rishabh was expected to be handed over the vice-captaincy, the board believes he is not ready to lead in Tests.

“Jasprit has been informed about the situation and he is on standby to lead. Look, Rishabh is very young and needs to be groomed to lead in Tests. If Rohit is not available, Rishabh will be the vice-captain,” the board official said.

However, InsideSport has learnt that Virat Kohli, who was the captain for the 4 Test matches on the last England tour, has not been approached to take the captaincy reins for once. Kohli stepped down from Test captaincy after the South Africa tour.
