This is not the start KL Rahul had hoped for, but 2022 has not been kind to him. His struggles with the bat are more visible in T20Is. When rival camps’ openers were slogging the ball and boasting strike rates in excess of 140, Rahul’s strike rate across 16 matches in 2022 was a paltry 126.53.

He also only managed 434 runs with the help of six half-centuries, but the majority of those innings came at a rate that hampered the team’s cause. Seven of the remaining ten innings in which Rahul did not score were single digits.

Rohit Sharma, Rahul’s opening partner during the T20 World Cup in Australia, is also expected to miss the home series against Sri Lanka. Rohit suffered a thumb injury in the third ODI against Bangladesh and has not been in the Indian team’s dugout since. He missed the two-Test series against Bangladesh, which his deputy KL Rahul led to a 2-0 series victory.

In addition, it has been reported that, in Rohit’s absence, Hardik Pandya, who captained the team in New Zealand, will lead the India T20 squad. The BCCI is expected to name him India’s full-time T20I captain in place of Rohit Sharma.

“The old committee will probably select the Sri Lanka white ball squad. As of now, it doesn’t look like Rohit Sharma’s finger will heal enough before the T20Is and in that case, Hardik will lead the side. As far as KL Rahul is concerned, his T20I days seem to be numbered.” said a BCCI source

Talented opener Shubman Gill is expected to replace KL Rahul in the squad, and there is also a chance for Prithvi Shaw to make a comeback to the Indian team, after showing tremendous form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last season.
