India Squad Asia CUP: Mohammed Shami T20Is: As reported by InsideSport last month, Mohammed Shami will no longer play a role in T20 internationals for India. T20 World Cup 2021 was Shami’s last T20I and since then, Team India has moved on to the likes of Deepak Chahar, and Harshal Patel amongst others. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will continue to lead the pace attack in T20s with the third seamer’s role open for competitors. Washington Sundar will also be not in plans for T20 World Cup. “Shami isn’t getting any younger and we need him fresh for Tests. That is why he is not being considered for T20s. We have had a chat with him post-T20 World Cup on his workload management. This is how it is going to be now. For now, he is not in plans for T20s and the focus will be on youngsters,” a member of the selection committee told InsideSport.

Mohammed Shami, who has been an integral part of India’s all three formats, has not featured in any T20s since the T20 World Cup last year. With Asia Cup 2022 set to play a crucial role in forming India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad, Shami has been informed by selectors. Similarly, Washington Sundar will miss out on the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup spots.
Veteran Ravichandran Ashwin will keep his place for now in the T20 squad although he is not guaranteed a starting berth. Ashwin has been recalled to the squad after eight months with just three months to go for World Cup. Along with Ashwin, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja will compete for the 2nd spinner’s role.

India Squad Asia Cup: Why Shami & Sundar are not in plans?
- The primary reason to omit Shami is workload management.
- Jasprit Bumrah will continue to play all three formats but he will skip the less important T20 series or the ones at home.
- Mohammed Shami did not have a great T20 World Cup. Although he made a strong comeback in IPL 2022, he is deemed to be a surpass in T20s considering the bench strength India currently have.
- Shami has not featured in any T20s since the T20 World Cup and has not been included in T20 squad for England series.
- As for Washington Sundar, he has struggled with injuries of late. He missed the T20 World Cup with injury and has only recovered now.
- With T20 World Cup likely to be Ashwin’s last in T20s, Sundar will feature regularly.
- Sundar is currently playing in England in the Royal London Cup for Lancashire.
