Shreyas Iyer’s struggles in the middle continued once again as the right-hander was stumped after a laboured knock in Basseterre. Walking into bat in the second over after captain Rohit Sharma was forced off, Shreyas had the perfect opportunity to build a strong partnership with Mumbai teammate Suryakumar Yadav and set India on the path to victory.
While the duo did put on an 86-run stand, Shreyas accounted for only 24 off those, scoring them off 27 balls in a rather mediocre effort. Iyer struggled to come to terms with the pace on offer and was also circumspect against spin. he was eventually out stumped, trying to loft Akeal Hosein into the stands in the 12th over.

Earlier this year, it was believed that Surya and Shreyas were competing for a sole spot in the Indian line-up for the T20 World Cup. Shreyas injured his shoulder last year which led to Surya’s debut and eventually him sealing the spot for the tournament last year.
Shreyas had shown his mettle with three quick-fire half-centuries against Sri Lanka at home before heading into the IPL with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Post that, it has been a downward curve for the 26-year-old as he has struggled to get runs under his belt. In the games he has, his scoring rate has been left wanting with India adopting a much more aggressive brand of cricket.

On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav has flourished, scoring a maiden T20I century in England while Shreyas was at the crease. On Tuesday, he scored a quick-fire 76 off just 44 balls at the top of the order, when others struggled to get timing or power behind the ball.
Suryakumar Yadav is certain to be in India’s playing XI during the T20 World Cup in Australia but Shreyas’ chances look slimmer as he adds up each low score to his name. Head coach Rahul Dravid has shown faith in the 26-year-old and handed him opportunities ahead of the likes of Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson, and Shreyas Iyer has done nothing to justify those so far.
