Chasing a target of 189 at Lauderhill stadium wasn’t going to be easy but Indian spinners ensured West Indies would not even go near the target. Hardik Pandya’s strategy of giving Axar Patel the first over with the new ball worked wonders. Jason Holder who was sent to open departed off the third ball. The opening spell of Axar also had Devon Thomas as he cleaned up the top three with just 33 runs on board.
After the horror show in powerplay, West Indies had more drama to come. It was time for Kuldeep Yadav to shine as he trapped Nicholas Pooran leg-before. But it was Shimron Hetmyer, who kept the hopes alive with a brilliant fighting 35-ball 56. He added 33 runs with Rovman Powell to keep things going for West Indies.

However, with Ravi Bishnoi introduced to the attack, West Indies fell apart like a house of cards. Bishnoi dismissed Rovman Powell to put things beyond West Indies’ reach. The rest of the match was a formality as soon as Bishnoi dismissed Hetmyer. In fact, it Samarah Brooks, Devon Thomas and Shimron Hetmyer were the only Windies batters to reach double digits. In the end, West Indies folded for 100 as India ran away with an 88-run win.

Indian spinners against West Indies in 5th T20
- Axar Patel 3/15 in 4 ovs

Earlier, it was Hardik Pandya who came out for toss as India rested Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant. Hardik won the toss and opted to bat. With another change in opening pair, things did not go well. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer could get the breezy start that Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav provided.

But after Ishan Kishan departed for 11 off 13, it was Iyer and Hooda who took charge. The two took India to 53/1 at the end of powerplay. Hooda and Iyer continued to plunder West Indies pace attack as they added 76 runs off 44 balls. Shreyas, who struggled in T20s, finally returned to form with a brilliant 40-ball 64. However, Hooda will be disappointed with his dismissal on 38 off 25.
Sanju Samson too did not have a great day as he wasted a great opportunity and gave away his wicket to Odean Smith. But it was Hardik who took charge before he was run-out in the last over. He played a stroke-filled knock of 16-ball 28, taking India to the 188-run mark. Then, the spinners did the rest of the job.
