How Dean Elgar plotted India’s Downfall? According to Elgar it was important to do tough chat with the players. Elgar talking to local media said, everyone was discounting us and no one gave a chance to us in the series.

The South African captain said this motivated him to do well & he decided to do a very tough chat with his teammates.

First Thing – Elgar did a tough chat with his team: Elgar revealed that after the defeat in the 1st test, he immediately had a one on one session with his players. He said, without bothering too much about the consequences – he did not mince any words while talking to his players.

“If you want to operate at a high performance level, you need to have tough chats. If guys don’t like it, that’s up for them to deal with. I’ve got an old-school mentality with bit of a new-school twist”, revealed South African captain.

Secondly – Laid Down Proper Challenges for every individual: Elgar’s role did not end there with the chat. He along with Mark Boucher created 1 to 1 challenge for each member of his team. Every member of a team was told, what was expected out of them & how they should deliver on their role.

’I laid down some proper challengers to the players, You need immense characters to stand up in these kinds of tough situations,” Elgar said.

“I laid down some proper challenges to the senior players as well, to obviously stand up and respond and it was brilliant to see the guys take the message and follow it. It’s one of the bigger challenges to get everyone on your side and buy in from a captain’s point of view. The guys responded brilliantly.”, very satisfied Elgar told the media on Saturday.

When asked what was the turning point for South Africa in the series?

Proteas skipper Dean Elgar cited Kagiso Rabada’s third morning spell as the moment where they truly believed they could beat India.

  • After Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara batted affirmatively on the second evening, they looked to ram home India’s advantage.
  • Rabada removed both of them and followed up with third Test centurion Rishabh Pant to decisively tilt the game in South Africa’s direction.
  • It allowed South Africa to chase 240 and in achieving their highest successful chase at the Wanderers.
  • They took that confidence to the third Test which they also won by an identical seven-wicket margin to keep their home series record against India intact.

“KG’s spell at the Wanderers, where he got a few wickets in a short space of time, turned the intensity up on the Indian batters,” Elgar said.

“They could sense and feel that it was a period where we could really strike and get the momentum back on our side.

“Chasing that total at the Wanderers was also a massive confidence booster and it’s another phase we could reflect on and use to our advantage.”
