Chasing a target of 182 was never an easy task. Pakistan did not have it easy either. Ravi Bishnoi struck first in the 4th over, removing Pakistan captain Babar Azam to extend his poor run in Asia Cup 2022. Rizwan began rebuilding with Fakhar Zaman, adding 41 runs off 30 balls for the 2nd wicket.

But Yuzvendra Chahal gave India a breakthrough in the 9th over, sending Zaman back. Pakistan gambled with Mohammad Nawaz, promoting him to No 4 position and it worked wonders. He opened the game up for Pakistan and changed the complexion.
Nawaz smashed 20-ball 42, hammering 6 fours and 2 sixes. His powerhitting put Indian on the backfoot. Hardik Pandya went for 44 in his 4 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal conceded 43 on his 4. Rizwan-Nawaz never let the tempo down in the middle-overs. Rizwan hammered 51-ball 71 with 6 fours and 2 sixes.
India fought back at the death with Bhuvneshwar Kumar removing Nawaz in the 16th over. Soon, Hardik Pandya ended Mohammad Rizwan’s knock in the 17th over. But Pakistan were firm favourites with just 35 needed off 25 deliveries.

But India had a chance to bounce back when Asif Ali top-edged a Ravi Bishnoi delivery in the 18th over trying to go for a slog-sweep. All Arshdeep Singh had to do was to take the simple catch. But he dropped the sitter. It was one of those rare unmissable catches that put Pakistan in front. With the win, Pakistan jumped to 2nd place behind Sri Lanka with 2 points and 0.126 Net Run Rate.

With Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceding 19 runs in the 19th over, the match was almost in Pakistan’s pocket. But Arshdeep Singh tried to make amends for the dropped catch. He bowled superbly, removing Asif Ali with a yorker to force it 2 off 2. However, it was too little too late as Iftikhar Ahmed scored the winning runs.

Earlier, sent to bat, India’s Top-3 finally delivered the goods exactly the way the team management expected. Rohit Sharma was off to a fiery start, hammering 16-ball 28. But it was KL Rahul who finally batted exactly as per the template Rohit set. Rahul hammered 28 off 20 as the captain and vice-captain pair stitched together a 54-run stand inside 5 overs.

But Rohit Sharma once again failed to carry on the momentum as he was dismissed by Haris Rauf in the 6th over. The next over, KL Rahul fell to Shadab Khan as Pakistan started to fight back.
But Virat Kohli had other plans. He finally looked his best self after a long time. There was no jitter in his innings. He looked in rhythm as he played some classic Kohli-esque shots to keep the run-rate hovering over 9. But India’s famed middle-order missed the mark big time.
Suryakumar Yadav was off to a good start but fell for 10-ball 13. Rishabh Pant missed a golden opportunity, scoring just 12-ball 14 while Hardik Pandya was dismissed for a duck.
A lot was expected of Deepak Hooda. While he did start well, he too fell with the scorecard pressure. The move to bench Dinesh Karthik for Hooda did not exactly work as per plan. As Hooda neither bowled a single over and could not really shine as a finisher. In the end, Virat Kohli’s 44-ball 60 helped India post 181/7. Kohli’s knock included four 4s and 1 six.
