“Jadeja’s right knee injury is pretty serious. He is supposed to undergo a major knee surgery and will be out of action for an indefinite period of time. At this point, if one goes by the assessment of the NCA’s medical team, one can’t put a timeline on his imminent international comeback,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The other area of concern for the selector is in his replacement. Axar Patel too has had frequent injury problems while the other option in Washington Sundar has been a regular visitor at the NCA. As India have to announce the squad by September 15, the limited time puts selectors in dilemma. However, the BCCI is not ready to rule him out of T20 World Cup yet.
A member of the selection committee told InsideSport that Axar Patel will be looked at as a like-to-like replacement in his absence.
“Axar is ready to take the lead role in Jaddu’s absence. But of course, being the player he is, it will be a big miss for us. The good thing is that we have good bench strength and everyone is ready to fill in and deliver whenever required,” the member added.

- The ace all-rounder has a recurrence of injury on his right knee.
- The same injury forced him to miss three T20Is against West Indies.
- It is still not confirmed whether Jadeja has an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury.
- In case of an ACL, he could be ruled out for six months or more.
- He will head back home and report to NCA for rehab.
- But BCCI has to announce the squad for T20 World Cup by September 15.
- As Jadeja will require surgery, Jadeja will be sidelined for a minimum of two months.
- Once Jadeja begins his rehab next week, selectors will have a complete picture of his recovery timeline.
- In the meantime, selectors are backing Axar Patel to fill in the void.
- Deepak Hooda is the other candidate to step up in his absence.
Meanwhile, the selectors will meet next week in Mumbai for squad announcement of not one but 4 series. Apart from T20 series against Australia and South Africa, selectors will also have to pick ODI team for South Africa. It is expected that, they will pick the T20 World Cup squad during the same meeting.
“Yes, both the squads can be named next week. Anyway, ICC Deadline to name the squads is not too far and selectors are likely to select both the squads next week,” informed a BCCI official.
