Anderson rested ahead of India series –
Ahead of the final Test match against England Ben Stokes addressed the media and said, “It’s unfortunate for Jimmy, but we’ve got a massive Test against India coming up as well. I’m not too sure how serious it is to be honest. He’s just got a bit of a puffy ankle.”
The decision to rest Anderson may have come with the team management keeping in mind the workload of their all-time Test wicket-taker.
Anderson will be expected to play a key role in the rescheduled fifth Test against India, starting July 1 in Birmingham.
If the 3rd Test against New Zealand at Leeds goes the distance, then there will be only 3 day’s gap between the two Tests.
This is the primary reason that England team management decided to give Anderson some rest before the all crucial test.

Jamie Overton will make his Test debut against New Zealand at Headingley on Thursday, in place of James Anderson. England captain Ben Stokes confirmed a solitary change to the team that sealed the series with their five-wicket victory at Trent Bridge last week and will now be ready for the clash in Birmingham.

- As things stand, the Indian team is also preparing for the clash against England as they are scheduled to face Leicestershire on Friday in a four-day warm-up match.
