Axar Patel has now joined an elite club, having scored the fifth highest number 9 score in Test cricket for India. Indian all-rounder Jayant Yadav is the only Indian to have scored a century while batting at number 9 in Test cricket. His record came against England in 2016 in Mumbai, where he scored 104 runs. Former Indian wicketkeeper Farookh Engineer is second on the list with 90 runs against New Zealand way back in 1965. Indian bowling great Anil Kumble scored 88 runs against South Africa in 1998. Karsan Ghavri, a former Indian bowler, scored 86 runs against New Zealand in 1979.

Axar Patel’s crucial 84 runs gives India the advantage in Nagpur

When Axar Patel came into bat, India was in a comfortable position, but not in a dominant position in the 1st Test in Nagpur. India had taken the lead, but to drag Australia out of the game, India needed a solid partnership, that came between Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja.

The two southpaws added 108 runs for the eighth wicket, and ensured Australia was well and truly out of the game. Axar was the last man to be dismissed in the Indian innings, but not before he scored his best Test score and produced 84 runs. With his knock, all the trash noise about doctoring the Nagpur wicket for the left-handers was also made to rest in peace.
