In a sport like field hockey, penalty corners are looked upon as a wonderful opportunity to score. It is at this juncture, where players like Harmanpreet Singh comes to life. But, one cannot just depend on a single individual to score. They need to be ready for all situations. India may get an opportunity when Harmanpreet is not on the astroturf.

That does not remain a big concern with India also having some other players like Jugraj, Amit Rohidas, who can make the opportunity count as well.

“It is not only about me in the penalty corners conversions. There are other players also, who are doing well, like Jugraj, Amit Rohidas and others. All of us are good drag flickers. When we get a penalty corner, the objective is always the same, to convert that into a goal,” he said.

India’s best show at the CWG far

  • 1998 – Fourth (lost to England in bronze medal match)
  • 2010 – Silver (lost to Australia in final)
  • 2014 – Silver (lost to Australia in final)
  • 2018 – Fourth (lost to England in bronze medal match)

Can India finally win gold at CWG?

India have never won gold at the CWG so far. They have reached the final twice, and lost to Australia on both instances. Australia will once again be the team to beat in the competition. They have won gold on all editions, showcasing their dominance. With Australia not in India’s group, Harmanpreet just wants to take it one game at a time.

“Australia are not in the group, but we will get to play them later., But as of now, our focus is to take it game by game. We need to improve accordingly and focus on which teams we face later on. That is going to be important,” said Harmanpreet.
