“My wife and I spent a couple of days in Starship Hospital with our daughter last year,” Patel said as quoted by Stuff.
“It was a worrying time, but I realised how lucky we were to only need a short stay. Starship was amazing to us, and we wanted to give back … this is one way we can do that,” he added.

Starship Foundation CEO Aisha Daji Punga was moved by the heartwarming gesture.
“We’re incredibly grateful he’s offered to support us in this way. As well as being a role model on the field, it’s further proof of his kindness and character off it,” she said.
- Ajaz Patel had wore the jersey against India at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai when he took 10 wickets against India.
- He had become only the third player after England’s Jim Laker & India legend Anil Kumble in Test cricket history to take 10-wicket haul.
- He had also eclipsed Sir Richard Hadlee’s record of 9-52 against Australia in Brisbane, 1995 after his 10-119 best for NZ.
Meanwhile, Ajaz Patel has been named for NZ’s upcoming red-ball tour to England. New Zealand will play three tests down under with Ben Stokes set to take reigns from Joe Root.
