Alexander Zverev vs Sebastian Ofner –
Third seed Alexander Zverev’s Roland Garros campaign got off to a smooth start on Sunday in Paris as he eased to a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 first-round victory over Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner. Despite winning the first two sets comfortably after breaking his opponent thrice in the game, the third set was challenging for the German as Osner put on a good fight when he was at 4-5 in the third set. Despite the challenge, Zverev managed to defeat the Austrain to make it to the second round.
Felix Auger-Aliassime vs JP Varillas –
Aliassime, who had faced first round defeats in the French Open in 2020 and 2021 scripted his maiden win at the French Open as he defeated qualifier Varillas in a five-setter.
The World No. 9 Aliassime suffered a slow start before overcoming Juan Pablo Varillas 2-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in a dramatic first-day clash on Court Philippe Chatrier.
In a tight match which lasted for three hours and 13 minutes, the Canadian struggled to play against Varillas in the first two sets, with the Peruvian making his Grand Slam debut.However, Auger-Aliassime managed to turn the tables as he cut down errors from his side to win the next three sets and advance.
Carlos Alcaraz vs Juan Londero
The sixth seed eliminated lucky loser Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 after one hour and 50 minutes to reach the second round at the clay-court major.
The Spaniard never played outside of his typical game on Court Philippe Chatrier, relying on his powerful groundstrokes and deft drop shot. Londero missed a forehand wide to go down 2-4 in the second set and his level slipped from there. Alcaraz will next face countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Dominic Thiem vs Hugo Dellien
Dominic Thiem of Austria suffered a first-round exit in French Open 2022 after defeat against Bolivian Hugo Dellien at Court Simonne-Mathieu in Paris. Dellien claimed a smooth 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over two-time Roland-Garros finalist Dominic Thiem. The Austrian was searching for the first victory in over 12 months but was denied by Dellien. Bolivian broke Thiem four times in an impressive two-hour, one-minute victory, capitalising on a below-par performance from the former World No. 3 to advance to the second round at the clay-court Grand Slam for the second time. Dellien advance into the next round and will face either Portuguese qualifier Nuno Borges or 21st seed Karen Khachanov.
On the other hand, World No.20 Grigor Dimitrov eased past America’s Marcos Giron 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in a match that lasted for just one hour and 34 minutes.
Women’s Singles
Ons Jabeur vs Magda Linette
Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur crashed out of the French Open in the first round on Sunday, losing to Poland’s 56th-ranked Magda Linette 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5. The 27-year-old sixth seed was seen as a potential champion in Paris, despite never having got past the fourth round.
Jabeur came into the event with a season-leading 17 wins on clay in 2022 and with the prestigious Madrid title under her belt.
