Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted that he doesn’t exactly know the reason behind Lewis Hamilton’s shocking decision to join Ferrari in 2025 and said that only the 7-time World Champion could answer why he changed his mind.
Hamilton, who signed a new two-year contract with Mercedes last August, told his decision to leave over a coffee at Wolff’s home on Wednesday.
“What happened is that we got together for a coffee in my place in Oxford and him returning to the factory and he said to me that he had decided to race for Ferrari in 2025”, Wolff said on SkySports.
“I only know that we were very aligned when we went into the Christmas period, and that was what was said in public and within the team. You need to ask Lewis why he changed his mind”, the Austrian further added.
However, despite making a shocking decison, Wolff said he has no grudge against the Brit driver.
“We have had a sensational journey together that will go down in the history books. We want to finish on a high in terms of his [Mercedes] career, but we will build another phase of success – and we will look back on this very good time with Lewis”, Wolff further added.
