WATCH: Williams’ Logan Sargeant crashes on first lap at Japanese GP Qualifying

Logan Sargeant continues to be under-pressure for his Williams seat in Formula 1 as he crashes out in Q1 during the Japanese GP Qualifying.
The American lost control and on his first timed lap and crashed into the barriers.

Logan Sargeant is under immense pressure to keep his seat in Formula 1. This showed during the Japanese GP Qualifying as the rookie made an unforced error coming out of the last corner. As a result, he crashed his Williams into the barriers and brought out the red flags.

Jolyon Palmer, when commentating on Formula 1 TV, called it a move born out of desperation. Logan Sargeant got a lot of oversteer coming out of the chicane and going into the last corner. Instead of aborting it, he tried to put his put in, upshifted, and hurled his car into the last corner.

Logan Sargeant tried to catch his Williams and was successful initially. But his momentum carried him off the track. As soon as the Williams went onto the grass, Logan Sargeant was just a passenger. He went into the barriers and out of the Japanese GP Qualifying.

Immense Pressure for 2024

Logan Sargeant is one of the four rookies in Formula 1 this season, counting Liam Lawson as well. One of them, Nyck de Vries, has already been ousted out of Formula 1. Oscar Piastri is amazing the entire Formula 1 world in that McLaren.

Even Liam Lawson, in just his third race in Formula 1, managed to score points. Something Logan Sargeant hasn’t been able to do despite Williams sitting 7th in the Constructors’ Standings. He knows there are a lot of good drivers vying for his seat at Williams, and that pressure is starting to show on the rookie.

What does James Vowles have to say?

“Heartbreaking for Logan, just on the grass and that’s game over,” said Williams Team Principal James Vowles immediately after the crash. “Logan built up to this weekend and had some good pace, just can’t get it all together.”

“For a number of races Logan has been on an old aerodynamic package. We’ve had attrition. We have enough to deal with the accident today. Overnight we’ll have plenty to rebuild the car.”
