President Macron calls for amends with FIA, hopes for F1 French GP return

In 2022, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali also floated the idea of conducting a Grand Prix in Nice.

French President Emmanuel Macron has come out in support of bringing back Formula 1 to la République.
With F1 having last raced in circuit Paul Ricard in 2022, the FIA and local authorities could not reach an agreement for the French GP and were hence let off the calendar. Prior to this, F1 was absent from France for a significant period before finally making a return in 2018.

In 2022, when the negotiations were underway between the organizers and the F1 management, CEO Stefano Domenicali also floated the idea of conducting a Grand Prix in Nice. Belgium and France have become two prime races that will be potentially seen in rotation. Additionally, one important factor to look out for is a push toward sustainability in F1, something that Macron also stressed in his latest word.

Multiple potential venues are pushing toward inclusion in the final charts. With new venues like Miami, Las Vegas, and Qatar in place, the axing of some older venues was highly anticipated. F1 recently unveiled its 2024 calendar, the most exhaustive in the history of the sport with 24 races on the calendar. However, Paul Ricard or Nice couldn’t seal a spot in the next season as well.

Macron extends his support for F1 return with French GP

Recently, French President Macron received a letter from the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, asking for his support and highlighting the importance of the French Grand Prix. The organizer of Paul Ricard recently remarked that France is arguably the only country where the leader of the nation has never once been to the F1 race event. Apart from these political quarrels, there has been a huge debate around decarbonizing the sport, something highly advocated for by legends like Lewis Hamilton himself.

However, the tide seems to be turning lately. Macron not only responded, but he also assured his active interest in bringing F1 back to ‘la France continentale’.

“Be assured that I fully share your ambitions. Indeed, as you point out, our country must be able, like the other major international sporting events that it organizes every year, to take Formula 1 to everyone’s enjoyment again,” said Macron as reported by Motorsport-Total.

“It is a question of the attractiveness of our country, the impact of our automotive industry, and the innovation to support the decarbonization of this sector,” added the President.

As can be seen clearly, Macron shares a similar sentiment to what Lewis has been voicing for a while. The changes that Liberty media will thus undertake are expected to be for a sustainable and carbon-free future.

Moreover, not just the stakeholders, but fans are also keen on seeing F1 return to France sooner than later. As of now, the F1 paddock will shortly arrive at Hungaroring for the upcoming Hungarian GP on the 23rd of July for some glitzy on-track action.
