Mick Schumacher Completes First F1 Test For McLaren

McLaren has Alex Palau as their official reserve for the season, they also have access to Mick Schumacher and Aston Martin's reserves

Mick Schumacher recently completed his first test for the McLaren F1 team. Schumacher Junior is currently serving reserve driver duties for the Mercedes team. He also took the wheel of Silver Arrows W-14 a few days ago. After not being able to secure a racing seat for this year, the German has been avidly a part of the paddock in the reserve capacity.

Though McLaren has Alex Palau as their official reserve for the season, they also have access to Mick Schumacher and Aston Martin’s reserves Stoffel Vandoorne and Felipe Drugovich. The Papaya team is currently struggling with a lack of pace and downforce-related issues lately putting them at the back of midfield. The woking-based team currently stands 6th in the constructors’ standings with mere 29 points to their name in 9 races so far.

More disappointing has been the streak of point-less races. Once a legendary team, has failed to score even a single point in five races this season. However, the recent upgrades in the Austrian GP have surely taken the team in a more positive direction, which was reflected in a solid finish for Lando at the Red Bull ring.

Mick Schumacher providing valuable experience to team members: McLaren

Mercedes share their reserve with the Papaya team in a contract as they use the former’s engine. Schumacher is one of the more promising drivers and is always a good resource for the teams to extract valuable information during trial runs. Schumacher was behind the wheel of McLaren’s 2021 MCL35M this week in Portimau, Portugal.

It was attended by mechanics, team engineers, and Interns working at the team to get some exposure and data gathered from the test. “Joining Mick are some of our mechanic and engineering apprentices and interns, gaining valuable experience working in a trackside environment,” McLaren said as reported by Crash.

In 2024, Schumacher will look to make a return to the F1 grid. However, as it stands, there are no potential spots for the German currently. If either of the four drivers including the Mercedes and McLaren team have to miss out on a race due to any unfortunate reason, Mick will definitely be the prior choice to take the wheel on their behalf.
