Las Vegas GP: Christian Horner issues huge warning to Formula 1 drivers

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has a word of caution for all Formula 1 drivers before the Las Vegas GP.
The Las Vegas GP will feature a lot of celebrities, money, and festivities. However, it will also feature one of the coldest temperatures in Formula 1.

Red Bull Boss Christian Horner has enjoyed a pretty stress-free life in Formula 1 in 2023. Red Bull have made a world-beater RB19. And Max Verstappen has used it to string together a Formula 1 season like never before. However, the Las Vegas GP might give the team and Christian Horner their toughest challenge yet. In an interview with Bloomberg Surveillance, he has already fired a warning shot at all Formula 1 drivers.

“Take a Jacket”

The interviewers asked Christian Horner about his and Red Bull’s approach to the Las Vegas GP. In his typically humorous style, he promptly replied, “Take a Jacket”.

The Las Vegas GP is set to rival the coldest Formula 1 race ever. That record currently belongs to the 1978 Canadian GP, which reached temperatures as low as 5°C. According to predictions, this race will reach temperatures as low as 6°C.

Tyre Issues

A lot of Formula 1 fans are used to seeing extremely hot and humid conditions in Formula 1. Just recently in Qatar, drivers were fainting due to the extreme conditions. However, weather as cold as the Las Vegas GP brings its own set of challenges to the sport.

The biggest factor in such extreme weather is the tyres. In the Las Vegas GP, the colder ambient temperatures will cause difficulties for the tyres. A lot of people, including Red Bull’s Christian Horner, believe that tyres will have difficulty retaining heat in such cold temperatures.

Therefore, without heat in them, the tyres will lose their grip during the Las Vegas GP. This will cause an effect that Christian Horner likened to “driving on ice”.

“Driving on Ice”

For the Las Vegas GP, Christian Horner said, “I was watching Max on the simulator yesterday driving around the circuit. It looks a great track. I mean, it’s gonna be super fast, there’s gonna be a lot of overtaking, opportunities, and the tires. It could be like driving on ice. You know which just adds another dimension. So, particularly on a road course on a street circuit, that can test the drivers and the team to the absolute maximum.“
