Formula 1: Toto Wolff is optimistic about Mercedes’ chances of winning the Constructors championship: The team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff has not ruled Silver Arrows out of the 2022 Formula 1 championship race despite their poor start to the season. Though Mercedes are looking way off the pace as compared to rivals Ferrari and Red Bull, Toto still feels it’s early doors in the season and the rivals shouldn’t write them off just yet. “I think we are on the back foot. If I look at it from a mathematical standpoint and probability I would say the odds are two to eight or eight to two,” said Wolff.

“But this is motor racing and in motor racing, anything can happen. Teams can DNF and if we unlock the potential of the car we are right back in the game. So as a racer I would say it’s probably 40/60. And as a mathematician, I would say the odds are worse against us,” he further added.

This year, with the new technical regulations coming into play, Mercedes have taken a hit performance-wise as compared to their previous seasons. From 2014 to 2020, Mercedes were absolutely unstoppable and they won every Constructors title in the turbo-hybrid era which started eight years ago.

However, the 2022 season has seen Mercedes as the third quickest team, behind rivals Ferrari and Red Bull. They have been hit hard by the Porpoising issues which have hampered their up-gradation of the car as well.

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have gotten one podium finish each across the initial three races. Meanwhile, Ferrari seems to have the most sort out car, and it presently leads both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings.

George Russell sits comfortably in the second spot of the Drivers’ standings with 37 points, whereas, his teammate Lewis Hamilton finds himself in the fifth spot with 28 points to his name. In terms of constructors standings, Mercedes are second with 65 points, whereas Ferrari are at the top with a huge lead, having 104 points in their account.
