Reports reveal that the team’s top executives, drivers, and engineering staff held a meeting on the Tuesday after the Bahrain race to tackle the issue head-on. In a pre-Saudi Arabian Grand Prix interview, Russell disclosed that the gathering resulted in a candid evaluation of their current state, as the team devised a plan of action for the immediate, near, and distant future.

Russell hinted that Mercedes is considering a significant shift in their design philosophy, rather than just refining their current approach.

“We are aware that changing our concept poses some risks. However, we believe we have enough information to conclude that our initial targets were not feasible, and we must pivot as soon as possible. The decision has been made, and we have already started implementing it since last week. The real question is how quickly this can translate into performance on the track”, the English driver said.

Regarding the design of the W23, Russell indicated that Mercedes might have been too conservative, which compromised its performance potential.

“In the W13, we were too aggressive with our design, resulting in excessive bouncing. However, this year, we have gone in the opposite direction, compromising too much downforce for the lack of bouncing. We realized that the changes made by the FIA over the winter have solved most of our problems. Nonetheless, we can recover some of the lost performance by being less conservative.”
