“I think the framework that actually exists within the power unit regulations is reasonable from a newcomer status perspective, which is obviously Red Bull Powertrains will be for 2026. It’s modest hours, and it’s a modest I think $10m in the first two years. And $5m in the third year as an allowance for a newcomer,” team boss Christian Horner said about the development.
The first draft of the 2026 guidelines is supposed to be finished by June. Under new plans, new engine-makers like Red Bull Powertrains and some others who join the game will qualify for an additional $10m in their spending plan cap for the initial two seasons and $5m in the third.
Moreover, a further $15m allowance would be made for capital use projects. Red Bull boss Christian Horner is content with the initial two figures. However, accepting the additional recompense ought to be greater as new projects will play find their more settled engine-making rivals.
Despite Horner’s concerns about that figure, rivals are considerably more stressed over a way the group might actually figure out how to twofold the additional sum they can spend. Meanwhile, this possibility has left Red Bull’s rivals Mercedes and Ferrari particularly worried. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said, “It’s not clear yet who actually enters as a power unit supplier. And who declare themselves as newcomers. It could well be that there are three companies from the same group that are entering as newcomers. The picture is still very unclear and whether $15m CapEx is enough or not enough. There are much bigger topics that we need to agree on, which we haven’t.”
