It was a controversial end to last year’s finale race where Lewis Hamilton lost out on his eighth F1 title. The safety car was brought on the track and a red flag came into power. The controversy doesn’t seem to end as a meeting will take place of the F1 Commission on Monday.

“We need to invest time and energy on the team side together with FIA. We need to understand what happened throughout the season and see how we can help. The regulations should be less complex, giving more support to the race director. Also, giving support to stewards to avoid these controversies. Meanwhile, making it easier in terms of policing or application of rules.”

In that very meeting, FIA will present its finding from its investigations into the events surrounding the season finale race. It will also plan out what to do to ensure there is no such controversy taking place in the future.

McLaren’s team boss Andreas Seidl believes changes need to be made looking at what happened in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He also thinks there should be a wider overhaul of how F1 races are run.

He also thinks some new procedures should be introduced if the stewards or FIA make errors in the future. There should be an agreed system where they can correct any negative consequences.

“For me, it is very important that we discuss it if you are in the position that mistakes happen again. Then you raise your hand and admit them. There should be a system in order to correct the consequences that such mistakes or controversies could have. It is as important as trying to avoid similar controversies in the first place.”

Last season had a lack of consistency in the application of racing rules which left the teams, drivers and the fans confused. McLaren were quite bamboozled that why Lando Norris was handed a penalty. He pushed Sergio Perez wide at the Austrian Grand Prix. But, Max Verstappen got away without having any penalty for a similar move in Brazil’s Grand Prix.

Seidl believes that FIA will deliver a strong response on Monday. But, he thinks more needs to be done to improve how the F1 races are run. Seidl added, “Hopefully we can end this topic with a strong analysis from the FIA side. Also, have concepts in place for how we can improve in the future. A lot of controversial things happened last year, which were not good for the sport.”
