The Mercedes driver, who has won three Brazilian Grand Prix previously, has a unique bond with the nation. The British driver expressed his desire of spending more time in Ayrton Senna’s homeland by saying “I want to spend more time here in Brazil. It is such a beautiful culture. I’ve only been to Rio and Sao Paulo. But I want to come back for Christmas, New Year, or something.”

“Brazilian soccer international Neymar invites me every year. Pro Surfer Gabriel Medina invites me every year, but I never had the chance. I’m waiting for my Brazilian passport,” he further added.

Meanwhile, this honorary citizenship will be another feather to Hamilton’s crown as the Brit driver was knighted in his own country last year in December. He was in Sao Paulo to deliver a speech at an event that was focused on business and digital transformation.

After last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix, Hamilton took the Brazilian flag and spread it out after winning at the Interlagos circuit. The crowd went nuts and chanted his name alongside Ayrton Senna’s name.

Ciro Gomes, who is a presidential hopeful and is also a member of Figueiredo ́s PDT party, has also backed the honorary citizenship for the Brit driver. “Hamilton, you already live in our hearts. With the honorary citizenship, you will be even closer to us,” he wrote on Twitter, to which Hamilton replied, “I’d be honoured.”
