Prior to starting the final lap behind the safety car, the penalty has already been given. Sainz expressed how annoyed he was with the choice over the team radio as a result. He demanded that the stewards give him the chance to hear his account of the incident.

Formula 1: Ferrari goes on offensive, asks for a review on Carlos Sainz's Australian Grand Prix penalty - Carlos Sainz, Australian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso

Ferrari has asked the FIA to reconsider Carlos Sainz’s punishment from the Australian Grand Prix. For the last restart, the vehicles were put back in their original grid positions. Sainz was in fourth place, but the penalty caused him to fall to 12th in the final standings.

On Thursday, Ferrari filed a petition to exercise the right of review procedure. Vasseur, the team’s principal, wants to talk openly with them.

Vasseur also stated that he will discuss about the incident with the FIA. However, for the time being, he does not wish to reveal any specifics of this conversation.

Prior to responding to Ferrari’s argument, the stewards must determine if they would consider it a relevant new element. If they decided to move forward, they can subsequently decide based on the fresh information.

Following their own crashes at the same restart, Alpine teammates Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon were given a hearing. No action was taken by the stewards against either driver.

The FIA usually waits to hear from drivers who are involved in collisions if they withdraw from the grand prix. It is somehow pointless to impose an in-race penalty. Ultimately it has no real impact.

Vasseur claimed that Carlos was  annoyed the most for getting no hearing. Everything on the radio was audible and in perfect clarity. The instance was very exceptional.

“The only thing is that about Gasly and Ocon, we had Sargeant and De Vries at Turn 1 – the actions of the stewards were not the same. But I prefer to avoid making any comments.” – stated Vassuer.

Now in order to win review, Ferrari must show that it has fresh information. The evidence that the judges did not have at the time of the initial judgement. A second hearing to take the case will be scheduled if the stewards think Ferrari’s case is admissible.
