According to reports in Formu1a.uno, the Monegasque driver will need a power unit change after his engine ended up in fumes in the last race at Azerbaijan. If it indeed happens, this will be Leclerc’s fourth power unit change this season.

According to the Formula 1 rule book, only three power units can be used over the course of the season. In case of a fourth power unit change, the driver will have to incur a ten-place grid drop following the qualifying session.
This subsequently means that even if Leclerc finishes on pole in Canada, he will start the race at P11 because of the penalty. This comes as a major source of relief for Ferrari’s championship rivals Red Bull, who already have created a considerable cushion.

Charles Leclerc has finished on pole in six of the eight races so far, but thanks to Ferrari’s technical troubles, it is Red Bull who have picked up the most wins. They are placed at the top of the constructors’ standings with 279 runs, as compared to Ferrari’s 199.
Meanwhile, Leclerc has also slipped down in the drivers’ championship standings. He is on the third position with 116 points, whilst placed ahead of him are Max Verstappen with 150 points, and Sergio Perez is second with 129 points.
