Perez’s greatest test in the first European race of the season, other than guaranteeing his car remained on a dangerous, soggy circuit, was keeping Leclerc behind him. And he pretty much ensured that and did it effectively.

It was really intense since halfway through the race. We had it all under control and then Leclerc started chasing us after the pit stop. And then it was a fight, trying to warm up the tyres,” said Perez.

“The most important thing was not making mistakes. With these conditions, it was so tricky out there. To get a one-two is a great result for the team. We’ve been unlucky, the start of the season has been so difficult for us. So it’s great to see everyone in the team smiling.”
