Formula 1: Max Verstappen opens up on intense battle with George Russell: Red Bull’s driver Max Verstappen enjoyed the fierce battle he had with George Russell at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Mercedes driver kept his cool and tried his level best to keep Verstappen at bay but the reigning champion somehow managed to take the lead in the race and win his second Spanish GP. There was one incident that happened on lap 24 where Verstappen came very close to overtaking Russel. The event was duly noted by the FIA race stewards but they opted no further investigation was needed. Verstappen said, “Luckily nothing happened with the FIA. I mean, there was a bit of grip on the outside, so I’m okay with it. I think it was hard racing.”

“And of course, I went around the outside but I’m also in the blind spot of George, so I think he didn’t even really notice where I was exactly, right? Well, for sure he knew that I was there, but it’s always hard to fully give a car’s width there because it’s a fast corner, you’re drifting wide. So if I was in George’s position, I would have probably done the same, so it’s just how we are, I think,” he further explained.

Verstappen almost overtook the Mercedes driver in Lap 24, but Russell cleared around the outside. In doing as such, he compromised the exit of turn two and permitted Verstappen to sneak around the outside and take the long route.

The Dutch driver enjoyed a fierce battle last year with Lewis Hamilton but it looks like this year his opponents have changed. Max has been battling it hard with both Charles Leclerc and George Russell is the latest entrant to that team.
