Wolves boss reveals he got apology from PGMOL over Andre Onana penalty call

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil revealed PGMOL's Jonathan Moss had apologised to him for the penalty decision on Andre Onana in Old Trafford game.

Man United vs Wolves: Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has opened up on the apology of PGMOL for a controversial referral in the most recent Man United-Wolves game in the Premier League. Wolves boss revealed that PGMOL contacted him to apologise for not being awarded a last-minute penalty.

Man United’s Andre Onana made his debut yesterday and kept a clean sheet. He rattled into Wolves forward Sasa Kaladjzic when trying to claim a cross deep into stoppage time of the 2nd half. Referee Simon Hooper didn’t award a penalty to Wolves. Even VAR didn’t help the visitors at Old Trafford. Wolves should have been awarded a spot-kick. Even experts and fans were not happy with this decision.

Gary O’Neil who recently replaced Julen Lopetegui was also booked for his protests on the touchline. While speaking in the post-match press conference, he said that PGMOL’s Jonathan Moss had apologised to him for not providing a penalty to the Wolves.

The visiting club’s manager, Gary O’Neil spoke to reporters, “I was told live that they didn’t think it was a clear and obvious error but having just spoken to Jonathan Moss – and fair play to him for coming straight out – he apologised and said it was blatant penalty and should have been given.”

He added, “I sometimes feel bad because he’s come out and been honest. I spent a lot of time with him today. I gave up most of my afternoon trying to understand the new guidelines and trying not to get myself booked in the first game with the new guidelines, which I failed in.

Gary O’Neil felt Jonathan Moss was also not happy with the on-field referee, “Fair play to Jonathan for coming out and saying it was clear and obvious error, he can’t believe the on-field referee didn’t give it and he can’t believe VAR didn’t intervene.”

Erik ten Hag’s men were not at their best in the season opener at Old Trafford. They made mistakes and were on the verge of losing points in the home game. It was the late goal from Raphael Varane that helped the Red Devils to earn three points. Wolves created few chances to equalise but they failed to score any goal.

Meanwhile, the Man United boss didn’t feel that it was a penalty. He was against Gary O’Neil’s protest for not getting a penalty in stoppage time. The Dutchman spoke to BBC Sport that he thought Hooper’s decision was correct. He said, “After the opponent touched the ball he dived in so it was the judgement of the officials and lucky for us no penalty. I think you can debate it but I think no penalty.”
