Raphael Varane came to Manchester United 2 years ago and quickly became an important part of the team. He was crucial to coach Erik Ten Hag and his vision. However, it seems that the France team defender has fallen out of favour with the coach in recent times. Ten Hag has preferred Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof ahead of Varane. Reportedly, the two had a ‘frank exchange’ over the coach’s choice which has led to this. Man United could put him up for sale in the winter transfer window.
France and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane sustained an injury months ago. He recovered only a while after back in October. However, he has not started any matches for the Red Devils since their 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace back on 30th September.
Varane has only played 18 minutes of Premier League football since then and it doesn’t seem like he will be back to the starting XI any time soon. Apparently, the player has fallen out of favour with Erik Ten Hag.
When Varane was injured, Erik Ten Hag chose to line up Harry Maguire who has provided a few amazing performances for the Red Devils. However, even when Varane recovered, the coach chose to line up Jonny Evans along with Maguire to man the defense line.
Since 30th September, Varane has only appeared in 3 Premier League matches totalling 18 minutes as a substitute. Even when Evans got injured, Ten Hag called up Victor Lindelof for their match against Luton Town 2 weeks ago. Apparently, the French defender was unhappy with the ordeal.
As per The Daily Mail, there was a frank exchange between Varane and Ten Hag about his preference. This seems to have worsened the relationship between the two. Before Man United’s match against Everton this weekend on the road, Ten Hag was asked about the situation.
He said, “Maguire took his chance when Varane was absent. When the moment is there, you take it and the other has to fight back.” As per the current situation, there doesn’t seem to be a way back to the coach’s good graces for Varane.
Raphael Varane arrived at Man United from Real Madrid back in 2021 and instantly became a key player of the squad. He played a key role in Ten Hag’s team and was a regular first team player. However, his form declined in recent times and he also sustained injuries.
There is a chance that Man United will put Varane up for sale in the coming winter transfer window. Bayern Munich have shown some interest in the French defender. As per reports, they could try to sign him on a £25 million deal in January.
Varane currently earns £340,000 per week at Man United. It is doubtful that Bayern Munich would be able to afford such a big amount. However, they will still try to finalise the deal.
The Red Devils are discussing a replacement for Varane in the form of Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice. However, if Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquires 25% share of the club soon, it could become a conflict of interest as the British businessman is the owner of the French club.
