Tottenham Hotspur suffer major blow, James Maddison’s injury worse than initially thought

Maddison suffered the ankle injury during their Premier League match against Chelsea on Monday night

Tottenham Hotspur are concerned that England midfielder James Maddison could be out for longer than initially thought. His ankle injury seems more serious than initially thought and has pulled out of the England football squad. Maddison suffered the blow during a Premier League match against Chelsea on Monday.

The midfielder had to be taken off in the first half of Monday night’s loss to Chelsea. Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou confirmed after the match that the 26-year-old had suffered an ankle injury.

According to The Sun, Maddison will be out for at least a month. His absence period could be extended for up to two or three months depending on the progress of his rehab.

The James Maddison-England Saga

The former Leicester City attacking midfielder was called up to the England team on Thursday. The call-up sparked hope of Tottenham fans that the injury is not as serious as it was deemed before.

However, the 26-year-old dropped out of the international squad on Friday, raising major questions about his fitness. England will take on Malta and Northern Macedonia.

Speaking on Thursday, England manager Gareth Southgate said, “He seems positive. There’s clearly an element of doubt. But I think at the time of the decision (of his first half substitution versus Chelsea), they had just gone to 10. Maybe the manager was thinking, ‘I’ve got a player who might have a knock and we’ve only got 10 players anyway.”

However, Tottenham issued a statement on Friday. It said, “We can confirm James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury. The midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions’ UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Maddison will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club’s medical staff.”

Tottenham face Wolves on Saturday and Postecoglou will face a hard task due to the injuries to Van de Ven in addition to Maddison. Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie will also miss the tie due to suspension.
