‘The rivalry is gone’ Ronaldo opens up on Messi rivalry after Ballon d’Or snub

Cristiano Ronaldo sheds light on the fact that both him and Lionel Messi are happy outside of Europe.

The end of an era began when both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi left Europe within the span of 6 months. Their journey has taken them to two opposite parts of the world. Yet, their fans still like their rivalry. However, Ronaldo recently came out to say the opposite, that two of this generation’s greatest don’t have a rivalry anymore. Following this came the news that Ronaldo has been excluded from the Ballon d’Or top 30 shortlist for the first time in the last 20 years.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi ruled European football even just a few years ago. Their rivalry still remains the hottest topic of the footballing world. Recently during an interview, Ronaldo opened up about his rivalry and relationship with Messi. He said, “Those who like Cristiano Ronaldo don’t have to hate Messi and vice versa. We’ve done well, we have changed the history of football. We are respected all over the world, that’s the most important thing. Both of us have been doing things well (in Arabia and MLS).”

Talking about their current lives, Ronaldo added, “He’s followed his path and I have followed mine, regardless of playing outside of Europe. From what I’ve seen, he’s been doing well and so have I. The rivalry was good, the fans liked it. The legacy lives on, but I don’t see the rivalry like that. We shared the stage many times, it was 15 years. I’m not saying we’re friends, I’ve never had dinner with him, but we’re professional colleagues and we respect each other.”

Following this came the news that Ronaldo has not made the Ballon d’Or top 30 shortlist. This is the very first time that Ronaldo did not make the cut in the last 2 decades. Ronaldo had an uneventful World Cup campaign, a bad end to his time at Manchester United, and a transfer away from Europe. Hence, he has not been nominated. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has been selected following his incredible performance during the World Cup. His efforts even helped them win the World Cup last year.

However, Ronaldo seems to be happy at Al Nassr. He is also helping them win more matches and even helped them win the Arab Cup Champions Cup trophy this year. On the other hand, Messi is also thriving since he joined Inter Miami. In the span of a month, he helped them win the very first trophy in the history of the United States club. He has helped the team grow a lot and it shows. Even though the rivalry really seems to be gone, both still remain at the top of their games.
