Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant rope in Jose Molina as new head coach ahead of ISL 2024-25

No decision has yet been taken on Antoni Lopez Habas' postion as the Technical Director of Mohun Bagan SG

Reigning Indian Super League Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant have roped in former ATK coach Jose Molina as the new head coach ahead of ISL 2024–25. Jose Molina was the former sporting director of the Spanish national team, but he left his position in December 2022 following a last-16 elimination at the 2022 World Cup at the hands of Morocco.

Jose Molina’s array of experience

Molina, an experienced coach, has worked with various Spanish clubs, notably Villarreal in La Liga. His coaching experience includes managing Getafe B, Villarreal B and C, and San Luis Club, among others. Molina previously led ATK to the ISL title in the third season of the competition.

Mohun Bagan won the ISL 2023-24 Shield under the leadership of Spanish head coach Antonio Lopez Habas, who joined the team mid-season after Juan Ferrando left. Despite agreeing to stay with the club, Habas was hesitant to continue as head coach for personal reasons.

Molina to join Mohun Bagan Super Giant ahead of ISL 2024-25

Mohun Bagan qualified for the coveted AFC Champions League 2 by winning the ISL Shield. Aiming for a good performance in this showcase tournament, the club sought a high-profile head coach and eventually reached a deal with Molina, who would return to his home city of Kolkata. However, Molina’s new job at Mohun Bagan SG comes with high expectations from one of the country’s largest fan groups, posing a considerable challenge.
