Senegal AFCON Winners 2021: Senegal beat Egypt – Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations champions on Sunday evening after beating Egypt on penalties. Senegal deserved to win the game with loads of possession and attacking display which they showcased. Earlier on Sadio Mane missed his penalty in the 4th minute of normal time but in the end it was the efforts of Edouard Mendy in the penalty shootout that helped Senegal clinch their trophy. Drama quickly ensued during the 2021 final after Senegal was awarded a penalty only four minutes into the game. But a thunderbolt of a strike from Sadio Mané was saved by goalkeeper Gabaski who continued his stellar form from the semi-finals.

Despite the early disappointment, Senegal were able to shake things off and take control of the match. Mané, Ismaïla Sarr and Famara Diédhiou were linking up well in attack but couldn’t convert.

Egypt, meanwhile, failed to register a single shot in the opening 30 minutes as they struggled to move out of their own half. Their best chance came just before the half-time whistle when Mohamed Salah’s shot at the near post was saved by Édouard Mendy.
Coming out after the break, the momentum continued in Senegal’s favour with Idrissa Gueye and Diedhiou causing threats but Gabaski came up big again on multiple occasions.
Egypt would then bring on Trézéguet, Marwan Hamdi and Ahmed Sayed to add some firepower but none of the substitutes could have any major impact. As time went on both sides continued to try and break the other down yet things remained 0-0 seeing the match go into extra-time.
Yet despite a handful of opportunities for either side nobody could find a way past Mendy and Gabaski and the match went to a penalty shootout with Mané redeeming himself by scoring the winning spot-kick.
