Scottish FA writes to UEFA for clarification after disallowing McTominay’s goal

Scotland’s ruling body wants to discuss few things with UEFA. VAR failed to look at a penalty claim for Lyndon Dykes when McTominay’s free-kick was disallowed.

The Scottish FA is not happy with the decision taken during Scotland’s defeat in Seville. They have written to UEFA for clarification over Scott McTominay’s disallowed goal in Thursday night’s Euro 2024 qualifier game. Spain won it 2-0 to offer Scotland their first defeat of the competition.

The Man United midfielder was looking sharp in the second half. He almost pulled off a comeback for the Scottish side but his free-kick goal was ruled out by Dutch referee Serdar Gözübüyük through VAR. It appeared his goal was initially disallowed for a foul by Jack Hendry on goalkeeper Unai Simon. Later, it was given offside.

The Scotland defender has a particular opinion to be interfering with play and impacting the goalkeeper’s ability to save the shot. Scotland FA need clarity on the decision and chronology of seemingly conflicting events. Meanwhile, a UEFA source told Sky Sports that McTominay’s strike was chalked off for offside against Hendry by the referee.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke shared his opinion and said, “At the time, we think it is a goal. You know when the referee gets told to look at it, he is probably going to chalk it off. They have made the call, there is no point in me going on about it. I think there was a little bit of confusion at the time, whether it was offside or for a foul on the keeper.”

Clarke also added, “If you take those two together, Jack Hendry was marginally offside and when he steps towards the goalkeeper, they have interpreted that as Jack being involved in the play but I will tell you now there is no way in the world the keeper was saving that, no matter where Jack Hendry was.

“You just move on. It is a VAR decision that goes against you. When we conceded, it makes it more difficult and the second goal puts gloss on for Spain I don’t think they deserve, he concluded his statement.

As per the Mail Sport, Scotland’s ruling body wants to discuss few things with UEFA. VAR failed to look at a penalty claim for Lyndon Dykes when McTominay’s free-kick was disallowed. There are few more questions which need to be added. the SFA feel that the decision to disallow the goal created an impact on the result of the game.

Scotland stands top of the table in Euro 2024 qualifiers Group A. It was their first defeat in the competition. They will easily go through to main event in Germany. If Spain defeats Norway, both Spain and Scotland will go through. Scotland will visit Georgia and then, they will meet Norway next month.
