Relief for United legend Ryan Giggs, domestic abuse charges dropped, no retrial

Ryan Giggs has been acquitted of three physical and psychological abuse charges accused by his former girlfriend Kate Greville.

Ryan Giggs: One of the most decorated Manchester United players, Ryan Giggs was accused of physical and psychological abuse of his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville. He was arrested in November, 2020 and later released on bail. Since then, the player appeared in front of the Manchester Crown Court several times to prove his innocence. Reportedly, due to Greville’s unwillingness to provide any more evidence against Giggs, the player has been acquitted. His barrister, Chris Daw told the media that the former Man United player is ‘deeply relieved’.

Ryan Giggs was arrested three years ago after his former girlfriend Kate Greville filed three charges against him. The charges were related to physical and psychological abuse of Greville and her sister Emma Greville. Greville accused that in the three years of her relationship with Giggs, the former Red Devils player used coercive and controlling behaviour towards her. Greville, who is ten years younger than him, also accused him of being violent towards her and her younger sister in a particular incident.

The former Man United player apparently headbutted Greville on November 1, 2020, when she tried to break off the relationship. During the trial, Giggs’ team of attorneys defended him by saying it was an accidental clash of heads. The accident was a result of a drunken argument that happened after Giggs came back to his house. Upon returning, he saw Greville packing her belongings to move out of the house. The prosecution charged him with “a litany of abuse, both physical and psychological, of a woman he professed to love.”

As the trial started, a jury of seven women and four men was established. Following a 3-week trial last year, the jury of 11 was unable to reach a verdict. Throughout his trial, Giggs had constantly denied any wrongdoings. His former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson was one of the character witnesses in the trial. During cross-examination, Giggs broke down recalling his night in a police cell following his arrest in 2020. Giggs’ defense argued that Greville lied repeatedly after she found out about Giggs’ serial cheating habits.

With time, Greville started to show some unwillingness to provide evidence regarding the case. She said the process caused her to feel ‘worn down’ and ‘violated’. After “continuing refusal” to provide evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service decided to drop all charges. Following this, the judge, Hilary Manley issued a non-guilty verdict on all three charges against Giggs. The player’s attorney, Daw said, “The position is that he has always been innocent of these charges and there have been very many lies told about him.”

He added, “He has now been found not guilty of all these charges and going forward will seek to rebuild his life and career as an innocent man.” A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson also commented after the non-guilty verdict for Giggs was announced. They said, “We have determined there is no longer sufficient evidence available to proceed in respect of the controlling or coercive behaviour charge and that it is no longer in the public interest to prosecute the remaining assault charges.”
