Chelsea has now spent more in the January transfer window than all other teams in the top divisions of Spain, Italy, Germany, and France put together, or over $225 million. Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez has now been acquired for a British record 105 million pounds ($129.18 million), the Portuguese club said on Wednesday.
After a full day of discussions between the two teams, Premier League Club Chelsea decided to pay the 22-year-old World Cup champion from Argentina’s release price. In 2021, Manchester City paid Aston Villa 100 million pounds for England midfielder Jack Grealish, but this fee surpasses that sum.
This follows Chelsea’s $280 million summer transfer spending in Europe, the first under the new ownership led by Todd Boehly after the club was acquired for $2.5 billion in May. Fernandez merely transferred from Argentine club River Plate to Benfica in August for a rumoured $10 million transfer fee.
