Ronaldo and Messi 2021:

Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus, Portugal, Manchester United)

Ronaldo had an eventful year personally for him although not collectively with his team. He won two cup competitions in Italy with Juventus but failed to win the league. At the Euro 2020, Portugal were ousted from the round of 16 after losing to Belgium. In September 2021, the 36-year-old returned to England to join his former club Manchester United.

On the personal front, Ronaldo surpassed Ali Daei to become the all-time highest goal scorer in international football in September. He only managed to win one trophy, the Coppa-Italia triumph with Juventus, but he still put up impressive numbers individually.

With Portugal, he failed to retain the Euros, being knocked out by Belgium in the Round of 16.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona, Argentina, Paris Saint-Germain)

The year had many firsts for Lionel Messi. In January, he was sent off for the first time in his club career and also became the first to get 20 goals in 13 consecutive seasons in the top 5 European leagues.

In August, Messi left Barcelona due to the club’s financial instability which meant that he moved to PSG where he has so far scored six goals in 16 appearances. Out of the six goals he scored in France, five were in the Champions League and only one in the Ligue 1.
