Robert Lewandowski heading to US? MLS clubs show interest in Barcelona striker

Robert Lewandowski could be on his way to the United States as multiple MLS clubs are eyeing the Polish striker

Forward Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona has been mentioned as potentially joining the MLS in 2024. As per TUDNUSA, ‘many’ MLS teams that are in need of a designated player striker this offseason have the 35-year-old Polish striker on their wishlist.

Multiple MLS clubs interested in Robert Lewandowski

The Polish striker has spent most of his career at Bayern Munich. He made the move to Barcelona in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has been in good form for the Blaugrana.

If he does move, Robert Lewandowski would be among the top paid players in the league right away. This is if he were signed to a DP contract by any MLS team, even at his age. Since the Polish striker’s contract with Barcelona expires in June 2026, any team interested in hiring him would need to offer a sizable sum.

It is not unexpected that Robert Lewandowski is being considered. The 35-year-old striker has been listed as a target for MLS clubs on numerous occasions in recent years, and it appears like the right time for him to finally make the switch.

In a September interview with AS, Robert Lewandowski spoke on how he thought he would end up in MLS one day. He said, ‘Before the coronavirus pandemic, the idea of MLS was firmly in my mind. But somehow I changed my mind afterwards. After the chapter at Barcelona, that’s difficult to imagine.’

In fact, there have been rumours in Spain over the past several weeks indicating that Barcelona is preparing for life after Robert Lewandowski. This does explain Barcelona’s recent interest in Santiago Gimenez of Feyenoord.

The financially constrained Catalans find it alluring to cash in on Robert Lewandowski. But it’s easy to forget that most the League Soccer teams have restricted finances, unlike the Saudi clubs, and Lewandowski is still only worth €33 million.

Where would Lewandowski end up in the MLS?

It’s interesting to wonder where the Pole might end up. Inter Miami will inevitably rise up because they have Lionel Messi and so many other well-known players.

The departure of great striker Josef Martinez has been announced, creating space for a new number nine. However, the expectation is that the vacant slot will be filled by ex-Barca man Luis Suarez.

There are supporters who think Robert Lewandowski might be headed to the Los Angeles Galaxy. When asked before by CBS Sports where he would prefer to play in the United States, he said the West Coast. He chose the Galaxy over the LAFC when forced to choose, and that choice would make sense.

Similar to Miami, the Galaxy just declared Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, their star center-forward, was leaving. Even if the Galaxy are no longer as dominant as Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan were, they are still well-known, and Robert Lewandowski, who is fiercely competitive, would find the challenge of assisting them in regaining their position appealing.

Safe to say, with Barcelona signing Vitor Roque, they do have a number 9 on their way. But, they would want Lewandowski to guide the young Brazilian for a while, before he moves away. This summer transfer window will be an interesting one, to say the least.
